Research On Air: Reaching Public Audiences via Public Radio

I gave a workshop for the University of Michigan’s Rackham Program for Public Scholarship in May 2019 focused on scholarly communication and public media. Over a four-hour session, participants:

  • Gained a better understanding of the media landscape, including podcasting, broadcast, and print sources.

  • Understood how media decision-makers evaluate stories, and how scholars can pitch their research as relevant to those decision-makers.

  • Considered how research about controversial topics, such as Palestinian, LGBTQ, or Black civil rights struggles, can impact the risks and rewards of public-facing scholarship.

  • Role-played pitching, shaping, and producing research-based stories for local and national audiences.

Please feel free to reach out if you want to commission a similar workshop for your institution or community! I am passionate about connecting scholars and storytellers at all levels.
